2009 JIC - APPLICATION INSTRUCTION AND CHECKLIST

It is strongly preferred that the application be completed online. Submitting your application online stores the information from Parts I, II and III in the FMMC applicant database. NOTE: Part IV requires original signatures which must be provided in hard-copy form.

application iconA blank application (click icon at left) is available to print for collecting and recording your information. When you have gathered all the information, return to this page and click the "Start Application" button at the bottom of the page.

Once you begin the online application, be sure to make a note of your unique Application ID# and your personal password in order to regain access to your application for corrections and changes. Be sure to SAVE the information you have entered into each page of the application before moving on to the next page or returning to the previous page.

You may return to and revise your online application as many times as needed until the deadline. Once you hit "SUBMIT" at the end of the online application, you will no longer be able to access or change your application. No applications or changes to applications will be accepted after midnight on December 1, 2008.

If you cannot complete your application online, click here to download a PDF file of the official printed application. This is the form that must be used if you are completing the application by hand. The same rules, repertoire requirements and deadlines apply.

Following is the 2009 Application Checklist, with details about the information required to complete your application for the 2009 Johansen International Competition for Young String Players. Use your browser's print button to print a copy of this checklist.

PART II - Repertoire List

  • All repertoire must be performed from memory except for the accompanied sonata and the new work commissioned for the competition for semi-finalists.
  • Contestants must be prepared to perform all repertoire that is listed on this application in the semi-final and final rounds. If the submitted repertoire does not meet competition requirements, applicant will be disqualified.
  • No changes in your submitted repertoire will be permitted. Selections recorded for the Audition CD, and all repertoire to be performed at the semi-finals and finals must be chosen from the repertoire listed on this application. No substitutions allowed.

Repertoire Categories:

  2. One sonata with piano from the time of Mozart to the present, with the work originally written for violin, viola, or cello and piano. This sonata should demonstrate ensemble skills and musicality. No continuo sonatas or transcriptions from harpsichord. For example, works by Giuseppe Valentini and Giuseppe Tartini are not acceptable for the sonata category.
  3. One concerto or major work for soloist with orchestra (such as "Rococo Variations" or "Schelomo") by a composer other than Bach and the one chosen for your sonata.
  4. One short work or a movement from a longer work that shows virtuosity.

To complete this section, you must include each composer's full name and dates, the full name and identifying number or opus number of each work plus major or minor key, titles of each movement, and the timing of each complete movement (minutes and seconds). You may use timings from your own performances, or copy timings from professional recordings for this section.
